Make Your Press Release Pop with Graphic Recording

Let's be honest – when was the last time you got genuinely excited reading a press release? If you're scratching your head, you're not alone. Most press releases aren’t visually appealing, which is a shame because they're often sharing amazing things.

Take this story celebrating a grant win from my recent client, the University of Kentucky. The REACH (Research Evaluation and Analytics Capacity Hub) program will use AI and data to help smaller colleges and universities access more research funding.

This is where graphic recording can shine: Instead of expecting people to wade through dense text, we can create welcoming visual stories that invite everyone in. The graphic for this story is particularly special as it encapsulates the most important ideas shared from summit participants over the course of three days. Suddenly, that dense press release becomes a story you want to share with your friends.

Here's the secret sauce: graphic recording helps you to think like a storyteller. As we collaborate to plan visuals for your event, we guide you toward the core questions to find out what matters most to your participants and where you can make the biggest difference. When we're creating visuals, we naturally think about impact and connection rather than getting lost in technical details.

Why do we create? Why do we meet? What drives much of our action as humans? Expressing our ideas and connecting with others in different ways is core to who we are. 

Stating the obvious here, this connection has been shaken up the past two years, and as we begin navigating in-person and hybrid situations professionally or personally, we’re rediscovering how to be with each other in meaningful ways.

As a graphic facilitator, I get to co-design for connection with clients. How do we do this, even…especially in the virtual environment?  A few of the seeds we can cultivate toward connection include:

  • Building in time for participants to share experiences outside of the work goals of the meeting

  • Creating opportunities for small and large group conversations

  • Thoughtful questions that support vulnerability

  • Creating visuals that highlight connections, shared ideas and values, or intentional visual metaphors deepen the opportunities to connect

In the Studio: I’m working on several projects from graphic facilitation design to more videos to a guide for children to explore our local river. How to Stand Out in A Sea of Booths

The Trade Show. A massive room filled with hundreds of booths, all wanting to lure in the same passers-by.

Most booths are using the same old methods they always have: the freebies, candy, “try our product!” to nab attention. There are trinkets everywhere. By the end of the day all you see is a glazed look on attendees’ faces as they attempt to find the exit (and preferably the nearest bar).

There’s something missing from this scenario. Something that can set you up for authentic connections and hook your potential clients.

Here’s the secret: people don’t just want a sales pitch, they want to be heard. They are yearning for genuine human connection in a sea of people trying to get their business.

Secret Part Deux? You can have it all: listening to your customers, interactive and engaging displays, freebies, and authentic human connection.

All you have to do is partner with a graphic recorder.

I love chatting with attendees, asking for their ideas, and seeing them light up as they watch their story come to life. Then they want a photo with their drawing, which is the perfect opportunity to ask them to tag the business I am working for when they share it on social media. Boom.
